A 2023 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) revealed that 13 million people live with vision impairment linked to their work, with an estimated 3.5 million global eye injuries happening in the workplace each year.
The good news is that eye injury incident rates have decreased over the past several decades, and standards around eye protection continue to progress to keep workers safe. In 2026, the latest innovations include dynamic light management, smart-device integration, and preventative therapies. Paired with the new ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 standard, which acknowledges new advances in eye protection and creates a framework for employers to choose eyewear based on performance and needs, the world of eye protection is rapidly expanding.
Highlights of the New Standard
Advances in eye protection include permanent antifog coatings, blue-light absorbing tints, comfort-driven ergonomics, and more. How does the new ANSI/ISEA standard come into play? Below, we break down some of the most recent changes in eye protection and how the new standard integrates them.
Antifog technology is now formally recognized. For workers who wear masks, respirators, or work in humid environments, antifog glasses can be essential. New antifog coatings perform much better than old versions, and the ANSI/ISEA standard necessitates testing and marking requirements so manufacturers can verify antifog performance.

This makes it easier for safety professionals to utilize the eye protection that workers need for specific tasks.
More consistent testing. The new standard clarifies procedures for impact, lens haze, and coverage testing, helping ensure products from different manufacturers are evaluated the same way, giving buyers greater confidence that products meeting the standard offer comparable protection.

At the end of the day, workers want to use PPE that not only protects them, but is comfortable, functional, and easy to use. The new ANSI/ISEA eye protection standard recognizes the advancements in eyewear, necessitates consistent testing, improves optical performance, and emphasizes clearer hazard markings.
