Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affecting workers across industries. While many people associate back injuries with heavy lifting, the reality is that long hours spent sitting at a desk, standing in one place, or performing repetitive tasks can be just as damaging over time.

Construction workers experience low back pain at higher rates than many other occupations, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), but the issue extends far beyond physically demanding jobs; in fact, 1 in 4 (26%) working adults report low back pain. Industries with elevated MSD risks include construction, food processing, firefighting, healthcare, transportation and warehousing, and even office environments, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The good news is that many workplace-related back injuries are preventable. Understanding the risks and recognizing early warning signs can help workers take action before minor discomfort becomes a more serious injury.

  • Whole-body vibration: Research shows that chronic exposure to whole-body vibration can lead to spinal degeneration and low back pain.
  • Prolonged sitting: Sitting for long periods without getting up to stretch or walk around can result in spinal disc compression and tight hip flexors.
  • Prolonged standing: Just like sitting for too long, standing for too long without breaks can also lead to back pain, also known as postural stress.

  • Soreness or stiffness upon waking: Difficulty moving comfortably or straightening the back upon waking, then noticing improvement with light activity, can indicate strain or overuse.
  • Tender muscles: Sore or sensitive areas that hurt when pressed on may point to muscle fatigue or injury.
  • Reduced endurance or flexibility: Increased tightness, fatigue, or discomfort when bending, twisting, or rotating the torso can be early warning signs.

Although back pain is common, many workplace injuries can be prevented through simple ergonomic improvements and intentional work habits.

For office workers:

  • Take short breaks to walk around throughout the day; ideally, stand up and walk around for a few minutes every hour.

  • Position your monitor at eye level.
  • Stretch periodically throughout the day.

  • Wear supportive footwear.
  • Vary tasks when possible to avoid overuse injuries.
